- Degree:Bachelor of Arts
The eight-semester Bachelor of Arts programme in Music Education is aimed at prospective students who wish to study music education at secondary schools with a second teaching subject or music as a double subject. The programme provides students with practical artistic, pedagogical and scientific skills. With a Bachelor of Arts degree, students can pursue a Master of Education degree in Music Education as a prerequisite for teaching at secondary schools.
The programme can be studied in two variants:
Variant I: Second subject
In the second subject variant, students study an additional teaching subject at a cooperating university:
- University of 球探足球比分 (Second subject: Mathematics)
- University of Hamburg (all teaching subjects)
Option II: Double major in Music
In the double major option, students choose a profile at the MHL that deals with musical skills in depth and in some cases enables them to obtain additional professional qualifications. The following profiles are offered:
- Performing Arts Profile
- Elementary Music Education Profile
- Profile: Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy
- Profile: Popular Music
- Profile: Music Theory
- Profile: Electronic Music and Sound Art
In addition to the profiles, students can deepen their musical skills in specific areas through extension modules (choir conducting, ensemble conducting, community music, pop theory/practice, pop choir conducting, big band conducting).
Course content
The Bachelor of Arts in Music Education offers a wide-ranging artistic, music education and musicology education and is characterised by close networking between the individual departments and a practical approach.
In addition to their artistic major, students are trained in applied piano, classical singing, pop singing and other optional instruments. In various courses on school music practice, students gain practical experience in playing many different school instruments and learn how to arrange music for variable ensembles. Choir and orchestra conducting lessons teach students how to lead groups. Improvisation, ensemble and chamber music, big band, chamber choir and university choir offer a wide range of opportunities to try out playing music together with students from other degree programmes. Other offerings such as drama, physical training, dance and foreign languages round out the programme.
Music education and educational science are an integral part of the programme and are explored in depth in seminars at the MHL and in inter-university offerings. Theoretical, scientific and practical music content is directly relevant to teaching. Internships are directly integrated into the structure of both the Bachelor's and Master's programmes and are prepared and supervised in special seminars. Students apply their specialist knowledge independently in interdisciplinary projects they develop themselves, both within and outside the university. The programme is enriched by international excursions.
Students acquire in-depth specialist knowledge in the fields of classical and popular music. In small groups, they receive instruction in music theory and aural training and deal with topics in musicology in lectures and seminars. Here they learn the basics that enable them to work independently in an academic context and teach on the basis of specialist knowledge.
